Angela Redish is Professor of Economics at the University of British Columbia. She received her BA (Hons.) Economics from Wilfrid Laurier University and her MA and PhD from the University of Western Ontario. She has taught at UBC since 1981, and has been Head of Department since 2001. She was Special Advisor to the Bank of Canada in 2000/01 and has served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Economic History. Professor Redish’s research has focused on the history of monetary systems, in Canada and the West more broadly. She has written numerous articles on such subjects as: the history of Canadian banks, the rationale for the establishment of the Bank of Canada, the operation of the Canadian monetary system in the 19th century, the management of the exchange rate in the Great Depression. Her (2000) book “Bimetallism” analyzed the evolution of the gold standard in the West, focusing on the role played by technological change in money production. Her current research focuses on the functioning of the macro economy during the deflation of the late 19th century. |
