Roundtable Luncheon - Alberta’s Economic and Fiscal Crisis: What Albertans and Canadians Can Do

Brian Jean was elected as Wildrose Leader on March 28, 2015 and has served as Leader of the Official Opposition and MLA for Fort McMurray-Conklin since May 5, 2015.

Born in 1963, Brian has lived in Fort McMurray since the age of four. From age 14-18, he attended Prairie High School in Three Hills and was active in school sports and captain of the hockey team.

Brian went on to receive a Bachelor of Science from Warner Pacific in Portland, Oregon, and then attended Bond University in Australia earning a Masters in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Laws.  He completed his Canadian law equivalency at University of Calgary and practiced as partner at the largest law firm in Northern Alberta.

In 2004, Brian was elected as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Fort McMurray – Athabasca. He received 60% of the popular vote in 2004, 64% in 2006, 67% in 2008, and 72% in 2011. Brian was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities in 2006.

He travelled internationally and domestically representing the Government and was well known for his speaking and negotiation skills.  Brian dealt with Canada-wide transportation matters and was also responsible for dozens of crown corporations including direct authority for Canada Post and the Canadian Mint. He oversaw all legislative matters involving transport and infrastructure including the successful roll-out of the largest infrastructure action plan in Canada’s history of $45 billion dollars. 

In 2009, he was tasked by John Baird with making $1 billion dollars’ worth of recommendations for the federal Economic Action Plan. From 2011-2014, Brian sat as a regular member of the Finance, Justice and Human Rights, and Industry Committees. During his time in federal office he helped to pass over 25 bills to benefit Canadians. In 2012, he was appointed as Queen’s Council.

Besides real world business and government experience, Brian has been active in his community chairing many senior roles in the Fort McMurray business community including the Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Business Association. He has also served on numerous charitable boards including the Children's Health Foundation (Northern Alberta).  Brian currently serves on the board of Health Partners International Canada – a charity which sends medication and medical equipment to those in need across the world.

Brian has been a printer, a logger, a farm hand and a registered trapper. He is currently CEO of his own company dealing primarily in commercial real estate and property development.
