Re: Welcome to the Intelligence Memos

I hope the C.D. Howe Institute’s many friends and supporters share my pleasure at the launch of the Institute’s Intelligence Memos. This new series of blog posts represents a fresh vehicle for us to get good, topical ideas from top policy minds into circulation quickly, and in a format that is easy to share and react to. We will post the Intelligence Memos on our website (www.cdhowe.org), and distribute them through Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn, as well as providing one-page memo PDF versions for wider distribution.

This initiative will take advantage of new channels of communication, as relevant to policy research and commentary as they are in our businesses, our entertainment, and our family lives. Our posts will address a wide range of issues, from fiscal and macroeconomic policies, healthcare and human capital, regional and sectoral challenges, work, to incomes and savings. I anticipate that the Intelligence Memos will quickly become a key outlet for the wisdom and experience of the Institute’s staff and Fellows, and the many experts who contribute to our output and our policy councils.

We will kick off the substantive posts with some reflections from David Dodge, Senior Advisor, Bennett Jones LLP, former Governor of the Bank of Canada and federal deputy minister – and Chair of the Institute’s National Council – on how the federal government should, and should not, support investments in public infrastructure. In subsequent days and weeks, we will feature prominent authors such as Frank McKenna, John Crow, Keith Ambachtsheer, Don Drummond and Duncan Sinclair, who will be writing on a range of critical topics – among them, pipelines, budget assumptions, the ORPP, and Canada’s healthcare challenges. We think their essential policy intelligence will enrich policy discussions, and promote a more dynamic and prosperous Canada.

We hope you will find the Intelligence Memos enjoyable and stimulating. My colleagues and I look forward to your reactions to the facts and ideas presented. We will include email hyperlinks at the bottom of every post to facilitate sending comments and questions.

Informed discussion of economic and social policy challenges has been a vital driver of Canada’s rise to an envied position among the countries of the world. The Intelligence Memos are the C.D. Howe Institute’s latest contribution to this key national asset.
