Improving Canada’s Pipeline Approvals and Energy Policy

Dr. Doucet assumed the position of Interim Dean of the Alberta School Of Business on January 1, 2012. He joined the School in 2000 and since 2005 had been the Enbridge Professor of Energy Policy. His professional interests are in energy and regulatory economics and policy. Dr Doucet is a past President of the Canadian affiliate of the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE). His research has appeared in journals such as The Energy Journal, Energy Economics, the Journal of Regulatory Economics and the Canadian Journal of Economics. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Regulatory Economics, and between 2000 and 2006 he was Editor of the journal Energy Studies Review. He continues to contribute to public policy in the areas energy markets and environment.

Ian Delaney, Chairman, Sherritt International Corporation

Ian Delaney is currently the Chairman of the Board at Sherritt International Corporation, a world leader in the mining and refining of nickel and the largest coal producer in Canada.  Previously Mr. Delaney has held senior executive roles at Scotia McLeod, Merrill Lynch, Horsham Corporation, and Viridian Inc. before joining Sherritt International Corporation as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in 1995.  He recently stepped down as Chief Executive Officer but remains Chairman of the Board.  Mr. Delaney also currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Westaim Corporation and Cenovus Energy Inc.

Edward Glaeser, Fred and Eleanor Glimp Professor of Economics, Harvard University

How the Future of Canada’s Cities Depends on Entrepreneurs

Ed Glaeser is the Fred and Eleanor Glimp Professor of Economics at Harvard, where he also serves as Director of the Taubman Center for State and Local Government and the Rappaport Institute for Greater Boston. He studies the economics of cities, and has written scores of urban issues, including the growth of cities, segregation, crime, and housing markets. He has been particularly interested in the role that geographic proximity can play in creating knowledge and innovation. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1992 and has been at Harvard since then.

Michael Wilson, President and Chief Executive Officer, joined Agrium Inc. as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer in August of 2000. Mike is a graduate of the University of Waterloo, Ontario, where he earned his degree in Chemical Engineering. He brings over 30 years of international and executive management experience in the chemical industry. Prior to joining Agrium, Mike was President for Methanex Corporation, a leading global producer of methanol, headquartered in Vancouver, B.C. In addition, he held various senior positions in North America and Asia during his 18 years with Dow Chemical.

Mr. Wilson is on Agrium’s Board of Directors and is currently Past Chair of Canpotex Ltd.; and of the International Plant Nutrient Institute (IPNI); Director of the Fertilizer Institute (TFI); Director, Alberta Economic Development Authority (AEDA); Director, Celestica; and Director of the Calgary Prostate Canada Institute.

Susan Lund, Principal and Director of Research, McKinsey Global Institute, Washington

Debt and Deleveraging: Uneven Progress on the Path to Growth

Susan Lund is a principal and the director of research at the McKinsey Global Institute, McKinsey & Company’s business and economics research arm. Dr. Lund’s most recent research has focused on how to revive job growth and boost long-term productivity in the United States.  Past research has assessed global investment and saving trends and impact on real interest rates, examined the scale and economic consequences of deleveraging in the United States and Europe, and looked at the long-term growth prospects for African economies. She has authored numerous articles in leading business and academic publications, including Foreign Affairs, Harvard Business Review, Journal of Economic Development, The International Economy, The Washington Post, and The Financial Times. She is a frequent speaker and commentator at global conferences on economics and financial markets. Dr. Lund has been at McKinsey & Company for 14 years and holds a Ph.D. in applied economics from Stanford University.

Paul Murphy, President and CEO, Independent Electricity System Operator

Paul Murphy is President and CEO of Ontario's Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) and as such is responsible for overseeing the safe and reliable operation of Ontario's bulk electrical system - one of the most diversified, reliable and efficient in the world. The organization also oversees the IESO-administered wholesale electricity markets. Previously, as Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Murphy led the IESO through the opening of the market and the recovery from the 2003 blackout. He has worked in the operation and planning of Ontario’s electrical system for over 30 years and in the development of competitive markets for the last ten.

Mr. Murphy frequently represents the IESO and other independent system operators on multi-jurisdictional committees providing strategic and policy advice on reliability and cyber security matters. Mr. Murphy currently serves as Chair of the Ontario Smart Grid Forum, an industry initiative aimed at advancing the development of a smart grid in Ontario.

Aaron Regent, President and CEO, Barrick Gold Corporation

Aaron Regent was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Barrick Gold Corporation effective January 16, 2009. Mr. Regent is an experienced executive with a wealth of expertise in the mining and finance sectors.

Before joining Barrick, he was Senior Managing Partner of Brookfield Asset Management and Co-CEO of its Infrastructure group. Brookfield is a global asset management company with approximately US$90 billion under management.

Mr. Regent previously served as President and Chief Executive Officer of global mining company Falconbridge Ltd. from 2002-2005. Following its merger with Noranda, he was President of the combined company, which had over 14,000 employees and mining operations in 18 countries. Falconbridge was sold to Xstrata in 2006 for C$27 billion, then the largest transaction in mining history.

Early in his career, Mr. Regent progressed swiftly through increasingly senior executive roles. His leadership and strategic experience includes two years as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Noranda, prior to joining Falconbridge.

David Jacobson, U.S. Ambassador to Canada

David Jacobson presented his credentials to the Governor General of Canada on October 2, 2009, becoming the 22nd United States Ambassador to Canada. Before coming to Ottawa, Ambassador Jacobson served in the White House as Special Assistant to the President for Presidential Personnel. Prior to his government service, he was a corporate lawyer in Chicago where he was active in civic and political affairs.

Since assuming his post, Ambassador Jacobson has traveled extensively throughout Canada to learn about the country and to meet the Canadian people. He has concentrated his efforts in four areas:

- Expanding the bilateral trading relationship - which is already the largest in the history of the world;

- Improving the security and the efficiency of the 9000 kilometer border between our countries;

- Working to strike the proper balance between utilizing the vast and secure energy resources of Canada while preserving the environment for ourselves and our children; and

- Fostering the shared values of the United States and Canada around the world.

Since coming to Canada, Ambassador Jacobson has celebrated the Stanley Cup victory of his Chicago Blackhawks. He was less excited about the results of the gold medal hockey game during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. He has taken up cross country skiing and showshoeing. He has also become an avid curling fan.

Ambassador Jacobson received a J.D. from Georgetown University where he was the Administrative Editor of the Georgetown Law Journal. He received his B.S. from the Johns Hopkins University.

Peter Wallace, Head, Ontario Public Service and Secretary to the Cabinet

Peter Wallace became Secretary of the Cabinet, head of the Ontario Public Service and Clerk of the Executive Council on December 17, 2011. Before his appointment as Secretary of the Cabinet, Peter was Deputy Minister of Finance for three years. Peter also served as Deputy Minister of Energy. Earlier, he was Deputy Minister and Associate Secretary of the Cabinet with responsibility for Policy in Cabinet Office.

Peter’s career in the Ontario Public Service spans 30 years.

His prior positions include:

- Assistant Deputy Minister, Natural Resource Management, Ministry of Natural Resources
- Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy and Strategic Planning, Cabinet Office
- Assistant Deputy Minister, Program Management and Estimates Division, Management Board Secretariat
- Director, Expenditure Management and Reporting, Ministry of Finance

Peter began his public service career in 1981 after completing a BA (Honours) in Political Economy and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Toronto.
