Tim Sargent is Deputy Minister of International Trade, and is responsible to the Minister of International Trade for both trade policy, including trade negotiations, and trade promotion, including Canada’s Trade Commissioner Service. He is one of the three Deputy Ministers at Global Affairs Canada, which delivers the foreign affairs, international trade, and international development functions of the Government of Canada.

Tim started his career at the Department of Finance, Canada, and then held positions at the Privy Council Office – where he was Secretary to various Cabinet committees – and Agriculture and Agri-food Canada.  In November 2014 Tim returned to Finance Canada to be Associate Deputy Minister and G7, G20 and Financial Stability Board Deputy. He was appointed by the Prime Minister to his current position at Global Affairs effective October 24, 2016.

A native of Yorkshire in the United Kingdom, Tim has a B.A. from the University of Manchester, a Master's degree from the University of Western Ontario and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of British Columbia. He is married with two children and lives in Ottawa.
