A world without cash is no longer confined to science fiction, with countries like Sweden moving cash free in the next five years. What are the implications of abolishing physical currency, and how far away is Canada from this reality?

Scott Hendry, Senior Special Director, Financial Technology, Bank of Canada

Scott Hendry was appointed Senior Director, Financial Technology (FinTech) in the Funds Management and Banking Department (FBD) in June 2016. In this role, he oversees the Bank’s efforts to monitor and research developments and implications of new technologies affecting the financial sector. He previously held the role of Director of Research for FBD and, before that, for the Financial Markets Department (FMD). His personal research has focused on electronic money, price discovery in the Canadian government bond market, and central bank communication. He has a PhD in Economics from the University of Western Ontario.

 

Brian Lang, President, MasterCard Canada

As President, MasterCard Canada, Mr. Lang oversees all aspects of the company’s operations, including regional strategy, business development, acceptance expansion, operations, regulatory, marketing and product introductions with a mandate for continued growth and innovation.

Mr. Lang is committed to expanding electronic payment verticals in Canada to strengthen MasterCard’s position as the fastest growing payments brand in Canada. Dedicated to delivering innovative solutions to MasterCard Canada’s customers and stakeholders while promoting the advantages of electronic payments, Mr. Lang is focused on advancing Canada’s position as a global leader in digital innovations driving towards a cashless economy. 

A MasterCard employee for 10 years, Mr. Lang has extensive global experience driving revenue growth and leading innovative, market leading initiatives in MasterCard regions around the world. Most recently, Mr. Lang was Senior Vice President, Market Development for MasterCard Middle East and Africa. In this role he led acceptance development, non-traditional business development, sales, strategy, interchange and pricing across 69 countries. In previous regional roles in Eastern Europe, Europe and North America, Mr. Lang advanced key programs to address customer needs and deliver unique, customized industry leading solutions. Prior to joining MasterCard Mr. Lang worked for CIBC, Aeroplan, Air Canada and LANG & Associates.

Mr. Lang holds a BA from the University of British Columbia and is a Board member of Junior Achievement with global experience in the African, European and Canadian organizations. He is a member of YPO (Young Presidents’ Organization) and is a Six Sigma Master Black Belt. Mr. Lang also serves as trustee of the Adair Trust.

 

Thorsten Koeppl, Professor and RBC Fellow, Queen’s University

Professor Koeppl is Associate Professor and RBC Fellow in the Department of Economics at Queen’s University and Scholar in Financial Services and Monetary Policy at the Institute.

He has degrees in management and in economics from the Universities of Eichstaett/Ingolstadt and Basle, and received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Minnesota in 2002.

He has served as an advisor to the Bank of Canada and several other policy institutions in matters of financial market organization, regulation and intervention. In 2011, he received the Bank of Canada’s Governors Award for his research on financial market infrastructure.

His main research interests fall also in the areas of macroeconomics, monetary economics as well as risk management.
