Roundtable Luncheon - Strengthening the Foundations of Canadian Research

Earlier this year, noted physician-scientist, Dr. David Naylor, and his blue-ribbon panel of experts released their recommendations on how to strengthen the foundations of Canadian research. Join us to hear Dr. Naylor’s insights on the scientific landscape, and how to help spur a more productive, thriving economy. 

David Naylor is a Professor of Medicine and President Emeritus at the University of Toronto. He earned his MD at the University of Toronto (1978) and DPhil as a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford (1983), before undertaking specialty training in internal medicine at Western University (FRCPC, 1986). Naylor joined the Department of Medicine of the University of Toronto in 1988, and was promoted to full Professor in 1996.

Naylor was founding Chief Executive Officer of the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (1991-1998), and then Dean of Medicine and Vice Provost for Relations with Healthcare Institutions (1999-2005). From 2005 to 2013, he served as the University of Toronto's 15th President.

Naylor is the co-author of approximately 300 scholarly publications. He has provided policy advice and strategic counsel to governments and healthcare associations, institutions, and enterprises in Canada and abroad for more than 25 years. This includes service on the National Advisory Committee on SARS and Public Health (Chair, 2003), the Federal Advisory Panel on Support for R&D (member, 2011), the Federal Advisory Panel on Healthcare Innovation (Chair, 2014-15), and the Federal Advisory Panel on Support for Fundamental Science (Chair, 2016-17).  

Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, an International Member of the US Institute of Medicine, and an Officer of the Order of Canada, Naylor has received a variety of national and international awards for leadership in healthcare, research, public health, and higher education.
