Impact Investing: The Opportunity for Corporations, Government and Philanthropists

C.D. Howe Institute

Roundtable with Malcolm Burrows, Adam Jagelewski and Bill Young

The growing popularity of impact investing marks a shift in behaviour to invest for both profit and purpose. Join us on February 26 to hear our panel of experts discuss the growing role impact investing plays in creating positive social and environmental change. Our speakers will share their views on the government’s strategy in shaping social impact markets, managing foundation funds, and the growing popularity of corporate impact funds.

Malcolm Burrows, Head, Philanthropic Advisory Services, Scotia Wealth Management

Malcolm is a nationally-known philanthropic advisor with 28 years of experience, including 13 years with three Toronto charities.  He founded and leads Aqueduct Foundation, a neutral public foundation with donor advised funds operated by Scotia Wealth Management.  He is head of Scotia Wealth Management’s 100-year-old private foundation services practice.

Malcolm is an active educator, writer and volunteer in the charitable sector. Through the Canadian Association of Gift Planners he has contributed to the development of new charitable tax incentives, including the elimination of capital gains on gifts of public securities and the “estate donation” rules.  His proposal for gifts of private securities and taxable real estate published by C.D. Howe Institute was included in 2015 Federal Budget. He was a member of the Technical Issues Working Group of the Charities Directorate of Canada Revenue Agency for seven years.

Malcolm is a co-editor of The Philanthropist, Canada’s journal on charitable sector, and President of The Muttart Foundation, an Edmonton-based private foundation, and board member of Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF), Barcelona, Spain.

Adam Jagelewski, Executive Lead, Impact Investing, MaRS Discovery District

He also hosts one of the most prominent conferences in the field globally, Canada’s annual Social Finance Forum. He pioneered Social Impact Bonds in Canada – a radically new way to invest in social service programs - and is a leading authority on social impact-focused products, policies, programs and standards. Adam has been published in the Financial Times, Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star, and is a frequent guest speaker at CBC, and at top business and public administration schools across Canada.  He represents Canada on the Global Steering Group for Impact Investing and is active on advisory boards of leading organizations, including the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and TerraNova Asset Management.

Adam enjoys magic and golf in his spare time.  He is trying to figure out how to combine the two.
