Managing Expectations: Doing Trade with the Trump Administration

After more than a year of intense negotiations, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) was reached last month. What does this mean for the Canadian economy? Mary Ballantyne, Director, International Trade Policy, Trade Policy Branch, Alberta Department of Economic Development and Trade

Mary Ballantyne is the Director, International Trade Policy, in the Trade Policy Branch of the Alberta Department of Economic Development and Trade.  She has held this position since July 2016.  As part of her responsibilities, she has participated in the current North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) negotiations, representing Alberta and coordinating Alberta’s input in the negotiations.

From 2013 to 2016, Mary was the Director, Alberta-US Relations, in the Alberta Office in Washington, DC.  The Alberta Washington Office, which is co-located in the Canadian Embassy, promotes Alberta’s political and economic interests, both in DC and in other U.S. regions and states.   During this time, Mary supported the Office’s Managing Director and promoted Alberta’s trade, energy, and other interests in the U.S.

Prior to that, Mary worked in Edmonton, Alberta, in the Trade Policy Section of the Alberta Ministry of International and Intergovernmental Relations.  During her time in trade policy, she has worked on identifying and promoting Alberta’s export and tariff reduction priorities in international trade negotiations, as well as the province’s interests in specific trade initiatives, including the proposed Canada-China negotiations and the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). 

Mary has an undergraduate degree in Political Science and a Masters of Business Administration, both from the University of Alberta in Edmonton.   

 

Jeff Boyd, Regional President Alberta & the Territories, RBC

As Regional President for Alberta and the Territories, Jeff Boyd has overall responsibility for Personal and Commercial Banking in the Region.

With RBC for more than 20 years, Jeff has progressed through a variety of positions including senior management roles in both Retail and Commercial Banking and National Sales Strategy.

Jeff is an active and dedicated community leader, including his involvement on the board of the Calgary Homeless Foundation, as well as Advisory Boards for the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Haskayne School of Business, and the University of Alberta Business School.

Jeff holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Mount Allison University, and has completed the Institute of Corporate Directors Education Program.

 

Trevor Tombe, Associate Professor of Economics, University of Calgary

Trevor Tombe (PhD) is an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Calgary and a Research Fellow at The School of Public Policy. Prior to joining the University of Calgary, he was an Assistant Professor of Economics at Wilfrid Laurier University. He received his BBA (Finance) from Simon Fraser University, and his MA and PhD (Economics) from the University of Toronto. His research focuses on a broad range of topics from international trade and public finance to energy and environmental policy. Currently his work focuses on economic integration in Canada, from estimating the size and consequences of interprovincial trade costs to exploring the implications of fiscal transfers between provinces (such as through equalization). In addition to his academic work, he regularly promotes the public understanding of economics and policy issues through his numerous public policy papers through the School, active social media presence, and general interest writings in various media outlets.
