September 24, 2018 – William Robson, President and CEO of the C.D. Howe Institute, announces the appointment of Mark Smith as a Senior Fellow.

“Mark has a wide range of experience, notably in the fields of human capital and financial services, in both the business and not-for-profit sectors,” said Robson. “He has been a regular source of insight and support for the C.D. Howe Institute’s research in the past, and we look forward to future collaboration.”

Mr. Smith most recently served as a Partner with KPMG Canada LLP, where he was the Financial Services Practice Leader, lead partner and primary relationship contact for a major bank, Global and Canadian Leader of HR/People and Organization Change Practice, and the Canadian founder of KPMG’s People and Organization Change practice.

Previous to his time at KPMG, Mark also served as the Chairman of the Board for Kensington Capital, a private equity firm; as Vice Chairman of Mercer Delta; and was Founder and CEO of Johnston Smith International.

Mr. Smith has experience serving on numerous boards, including those of organizations such as Kensington Capital, SAL, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board of Ontario, and the Premier’s Council on Health Strategy.

Over the course of his career, he has consulted for clients such as Tim Hortons, Harry Rosen, Canadian Tire, Westjet, RBC, CIBC, TD Bank, Manulife, Sun Life, Encana, BP, Cadillac Fairview, Bell, AT&T, and most ministries in the Ontario government.

A committed volunteer, Mark has served on the boards of the Invest in Kids Foundation, the Children’s Aid Society Foundation, the YMCA, the Premier’s Council on Health Strategy, the Psychology Foundation of Canada, and the Rosedale United Church.  He has served as program advisor to Outward Bound and helped them develop their corporate leadership development programs. He also raised money for various hospitals and the YMCA.
