October 4th, 2018 – William Robson, President and CEO of the C.D. Howe Institute, announces the appointment of Gerry Protti as a Senior Fellow.

“Gerry has unparalleled experience in Canada’s energy sector,” commented Robson. “We are delighted that he will be joining the C.D. Howe Institute in this capacity, especially at a time when energy policy in Canada so badly needs more of the wisdom and policy insights he can provide.”  

Gerry Protti has more than 40 years of experience in the energy industry. He has recently completed a five year appointment as Chair of the Alberta Energy Regulator, the largest energy regulator in North America.

Gerry’s work experience includes 15 years as an executive officer of EnCana Corporation and PanCanadian Energy. He was founding president of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) and executive director of the Independent Petroleum Association of Canada. He has also worked as an assistant deputy minister with the Government of Alberta and commenced his career with Ontario Hydro and the Canadian Energy Research Institute.

His extensive governance experience includes Chair of CAPP, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and the Public Policy Forum. He has also served on the Boards of Alberta Innovates - Technology Futures, the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, SAIT Polytechnic and the University of Alberta.

He currently sits on the international advisory council for Emerald Technology Ventures and advises clients on regulatory and technology issues.

Gerry received a Bachelor of Arts, Honours (Economics) from the University of Alberta and a Master of Arts (Economics) from the University of Western Ontario. He has completed the Wharton Business School’s Advanced Management Program at the University of Pennsylvania and is an Institute of Corporate Directors certified Director, ICD.D.
