Ellis Jacob was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Canada’s largest motion picture exhibition company—Cineplex Entertainment—in October 2005. His more than 27 years of leadership experience in the motion picture exhibition industry has transformed the movie-going experience for Canadians.

Prior to the acquisition of Famous Players and the creation of Cineplex Entertainment, Mr. Jacob was President and Chief Executive Officer of Cineplex Galaxy LP, a company created through the merger of Galaxy Entertainment Inc. and the Canadian assets of Cineplex Odeon Corporation. In 1999, Mr. Jacob co-founded Galaxy Entertainment Inc. after serving in various roles within Cineplex Odeon Corporation from 1987 to 1998, culminating in the role of Chief Operating Officer.

Mr. Jacob is an active philanthropist. He is a member of the Board of Directors at Toronto’s Baycrest Centre for Geriatrics, he chairs the Commercialization Committee and is a member of the Baycrest Finance and Audit Committee.  At Baycrest, Mr. Jacob recently opened the Jacob Family Theatre in the Abe Posluns Auditorium—a multi-use auditorium that serves as a cinema for residents, families and caregivers, and also as a space for education, training and the Tele-Health Network initiative. Mr. Jacob helped construct similar auditoriums at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children and Mount Sinai Hospital, where he also serves as a member of the Board of Governors.

Mr. Jacob is a Director of Cineplex Inc., the Movie Theatre Association of Canada and the Toronto International Film Festival, where he also serves as member of the Audit Committee. He is a Director of the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) and a member of NATO’s Executive Committee. Mr. Jacob serves on the Board of Directors for Husky Injection Molding Systems Ltd., where he also chairs the Audit Committee. He is a member of the Board of Directors for Dundee Corporation where he is a member of the Audit Committee.

Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Jacob has been honoured numerous times for his vision, integrity and strong leadership. He was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2010 for his contributions to the entertainment and movie exhibition industry, and for his voluntary and philanthropic endeavours.  In 2014, Mr. Jacob was awarded Waterstone Capital’s Most Admired CEO in the Enterprise Category. In 2013 his motivation to stay ahead of the pack earned him the Most Innovative CEO award from Canadian Business Magazine. He also received the Show “E” Award in 2013 and the ShoWester of the Year Award in 2008 – awards bestowed on a movie entertainment executive whose achievements, accomplishments and dedication to the industry are unequalled. In 2005, Mr. Jacob received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Ontario.

Mr. Jacob holds an MBA from the Schulich School of Business and holds the accounting designations of Fellow Chartered Professional Accountant (FCPA), Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA) and Fellow Certified Management Accountant (FCMA). He also holds the ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors.
