Nicolas Marceau, Minister of Finance and the Economy, Québec National Assembly

Nicolas Marceau is in his second term as member of the National Assembly for the riding of Rousseau in the Lanaudière region. He has been Minister of Finance and the Economy since September 2012. He also chairs the Comité ministériel de la prospérité et du développement régional (committee on prosperity and regional development) and is a member of the Comité ministériel de la région métropolitaine (metropolitan region committee).

Mr. Marceau was first elected on September 21, 2009. In his first term, he was the official opposition’s spokesperson for finance and economic development.

Before entering politics, Mr. Marceau was a professor in the department of economics at the Université du Québec à Montréal since 1996. He began his career as professor in the department of economics at the Université Laval from 1992 to 1996.

During his academic career, Mr. Marceau held various administrative positions within the Société canadienne de science économique, including that of president in 2006 and 2007. He was also a director of the Centre interuniversitaire sur le risque, les politiques économiques et l’emploi (CIRPÉE) from 2002 to 2005.

In 2001-2002, Mr. Marceau was a member of the Québec government’s Commission on Fiscal Imbalance. In addition, he was a member of the public finances and taxation committee of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal from 2003 to 2009.

Mr. Marceau received his doctorate in economics from Queen's University in Ontario. He is the author of several scientific publications in public economics.
